Beetroot’s (Beta vulgaris rubra) were domesticated in the Middle East for their greens but it was the ancient Romans who grew these plants for their tasty & nutritious tap roots. Traditionally this root vegetable was used to treat disorders of the blood & digestion.
Recent research shows that beets help reduce blood pressure. Other healing actions include antioxidant & anti-inflammatory behaviour which are found actively in the strong pigment of this vegetable. There are also suggestions that beetroots have positive effects on cognition & endothelial function.
